1972 Volkswagen Super Beetle 1302S
This amazing Super Beetle with rare factory sunroof option is in completely original condition and has covered 72,000 miles from new in the hands of just four owners.
It was supplied when new to California and sold via VW Dealer Rose Murty in San Jose to a Mr Roy St George of Santa Clara who obviously loved his Beetle as he kept it until 2009 and looked after it very carefully as detailed in the original supply paperwork and history on file.
In 2009 the car passed to a relative of Mr St George, also in Santa Clara who kept it until 2011 and 65,000 miles before selling it to another California resident and Beetle enthusiast. Further invoicing shows that once again the car was in safe and diligent hands.
In 2018 the car was bought by a well-respected German Classic Dealer who was able to see what a unique example this was. He was going to exhibit it on his stand at the renowned Techno Classic Car Show in Essen in 2018 but it was bought by an eagle-eyed British Porsche specialist whilst being unloaded from the transporter outside the show. In his words ‘one look at the perfect original underside and I knew I had to buy it’
The warm and dry California climate and careful custodians helps to explain the amazing originality – the sun-baked paint gives a patina that VW enthusiasts now invest huge time and money trying to recreate. The paintwork remains factory fresh where the sun hasn’t been, the wheel arches, underside, panel edges and lower boot lip for example. Inside the trim is original and as new, a testament to VW quality back then and the same finish applies to the boot and engine area.
However, it’s the drive that is most pleasing, the car drives as it would have when new, it’s as simple as that. I know I go on about the tautness and special feel of a car that’s never been apart but it’s so true and this car has that original smell, feel and freshness in spades.
