1948 Bristol 400 Ex Mille Miglia

This is one of only 130 examples of the 400 reckoned to exist today according to the Bristol Owners Club and it must be amongst the best. First registered in 1948 it is from the middle period of production and hence features some of the Series Two modifications including boot mounted spare wheel, optional heater, opening rear window and uniquely, wind down as opposed to sliding door windows.

There is a full history from new spanning fifteen owners and 300,000 miles with a detailed history file which includes many invoices from Bristol Cars from the late 1949’s onwards, original owners handbook and fascinating correspondence between owners and Bristol Cars. It was first registered by Bristol themselves and was used as a company car by Bristol’s Chief Test Pilot Cyril Unwin. 

A fastidious collector and regular Hairpin customer bought the car in 2017 for classic European rallying. To this end a comprehensive rebuild was commissioned by him and completed by Bristol specialist Spencer Lane Jones and others. Invoicing on file amounting to in excess of £50,000 fully details this work. The original engine was rebuilt 12,000 miles ago and the original gearbox replaced with a newly rebuilt later unit incorporating overdrive and remote gear change for relaxed motorway cruising. Further sympathetic upgrades include colour matched seatbelts, high intensity rear lights and indicators, high intensity auxiliary driving lights, oil cooler, Kenlowe electric fan, electronic ignition, Gauge Pilot Rally Pro Navigator and Michelin X radial tyres. 

In 2018 the Bristol successfully completed the Mille Miglia with a trouble-free run and midfield finish, it also successfully completed the Ennstal Classic in Austria and Leggenda Di Bassano in Italy. The car returned to Spencer Lane Jones during this period for servicing work, snagging and further upgrade. 

Finished in an appropriate shade of pale Jade Green with beige leather interior and complementing tan carpets the 400 is in great order in all respects and drives exceptionally well. It is very much ready to be enjoyed by a new owner in future classic events or a simple Sunday morning drive.
