2005 Mercedes Benz SL65 AMG

£ 52,995

This is a very rare UK supplied example of the ultimate SL version featuring the 6.0 litre V12 power unit hand-built by AMG with twin turbo chargers. Producing in excess of 600 bhp, performance was predictably rapid with the zero to sixty dash covered in less than four seconds, perhaps most impressive though is the sheer relentless nature and smoothness of the power delivery. Leading title Car and Driver commented “after you drive the SL65 every car will feel underpowered and rather anaemic”.

This example features a high specification and has covered only 44,000 miles in the hands of three owners with a full history from new.

It was ordered when new from Mercedes main dealer Hughes of Beaconsfield by Mr Tara Getty, a great car enthusiast and son of billionaire businessman and noted philanthropist Sir John Paul Getty. Finished in silver, many option boxes were ticked on the order including: 19” AMG alloys, AMG Drivers Pack, AMG Exclusive Nappa Leather, Comfort Ventilated Seats, Garage Door Opener, Keyless Go, Panoramic Glass variously-roof, Velour AMG floormats and Linguatronic voice activation. These extras increased the list price from £150,097 to £169,217 – an expensive car indeed!

Mr Getty retained the Mercedes until 2008, covering some 17,000 miles in this period, the supplying dealer was used for servicing as per Mercedes schedule and as detailed in the original stamped service book on file.

I bought the car from Mr Getty in 2008, it was as new throughout and quickly found a new home with second owner Mr John Young, a noted racing driver in the 1950’s and proprietor of Rose and Young, one of the UK’s oldest and largest Mercedes Benz dealerships. The SL65 shared garage space with Mr Young’s notable collection of cars which included one of the very last 300SL Roadsters to be sold in the UK in 1963.

Mr Young obviously liked the Mercedes as it remained in his ownership until his passing in 2017. During this time the mileage rose to 41,000 miles and as before it was correctly maintained and carefully used.

In 2017 the SL was purchased by the last owner, joining his private collection of contemporary sports cars. As with the two previous owners the car has continued to be correctly maintained and gently exercised.

Today the SL remains in exceptional original condition throughout with little evidence of wear in any respect. This impression continues on the road with a tautness and fluidity displayed only by a well maintained and carefully used low mileage example. It comes with all books in the correct owner’s wallet, all keys, tools, original sales brochures and a good history file that details the life of the car with service invoices, MOT certificates and correspondence.

What a great car for so little money! A rare and special AMG Mercedes with one of the finest power units of modern times, the like of which we are sadly unlikely to see again.
