2000 TVR Chimaera 450S Turbo

This unique and beautifully executed vehicle is the result of a TVR enthusiasts desire to create his ultimate TVR combining the best elements of the many models previously owned and being exciting enough to provide the exhilaration he had enjoyed in his motorcycling days.

After much research a late low mileage Chimaera 450S was chosen as the starting point, an iconic TVR model well sorted by the end of production and with the unburstable 4.5 litre version of the normally aspirated classic V8. A virtually perfect two owner example was duly found with just 4,500 miles on the clock finished in the best colour combination of Starmist Blue with blue and magnolia half leather interior. 

Development and testing began immediately, the aim being to create a wonderfully fast yet well balanced and sorted car with a standard factory look, indeed a car that TVR may have produced themselves if production had continued and with no financial compromises necessary.

Suffice it to say the development process took many years and is too lengthy to detail here however it is fully laid out in the extensive history files that accompany the car. 


The engine festures a top hat linered block with low compression forged pistons with ceramic coated crowns and Teflon coated skirts, flowed ported big valve heads, enlarged and ported inlet manifold/trumpet base, thermal insulator, enlarged throttle, lightened steel flywheel, all fully balanced, MS2 ECU for fuel and spark, unrated fuel injectors, updated fuel pump, ceramic coated de-cat manifolds with non-return cones, turbocharged at 14 psi with inter cooler. Drive is through a TKO 600 gearbox with McCloud RST twin plate clutch with upgraded drive shafts.

The suspension is independent all round with double wishbones and Gaz Gold dampers, front braking has been enhanced with 12.9 inch AP brake upgrade to front and ventilated 9.9 inch discs to the rear. 

Externally the Chimaera sports a Tuscan Speed Six headlight conversion vastly improving lighting performance, with extra vents in the front air dam for twin oil coolers and extra vents in the rear of the bonnet to aid the flow of cooling air away from the engine. Tuscan style 18 inch aluminium spider alloys complete the transformation.

Alcantara has been added to the dash top, door tops, side bolsters and steering wheel centre. The Leven Technology aluminium kit has been added throughout and a special order matching boost gauge added to the dashboard to show boost pressure.

A recent drive really does emphasis what a triumph this project is. The standard of work is to the highest level throughout with no expense spared. This Chimaera really does show how far TVR could have taken the  Chimaera had the money been there. The subtle body and interior upgrades look like a factory upgrade, whilst the fit and finish and detail are way beyond TVR factory standards. 

However it is in the road where the TVR really does impress, power has increased from the standard 285 bhp to 573 bhp at just 4,500 rpm, even more significant is the rise in torque from 310lb/ft as standard to 600lb/ft at 4,500 rpm. This of course would not be of much use if the braking and suspension upgrades did not work but, reassuringly they do, resulting in a car that feels very well sorted and amazingly capable. Two steering wheel mounted switches allow adjustment of the boost in three stages as required.

Since completion the car has featured in a number of magazine articles and has featured at a number of car shows, the car and its creator are well-known in TVR circles.

 

Now a three owner Chimaera with 20,000 miles, this unique car remains in virtually unmarked and superb order in all respects and is available for significantly less than the development costs alone. It comes with all original books in the correct TVR wallet, several files of history and a computer laptop fully documenting the upgrades, tools, keys and magazine copies that feature the car.
