1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 'Daytona'

A fantastic example of a UK supplied right hand drive Daytona coupe finished in its striking original factory colours of Argento Auteuil with Pelle Blu leather interior. It has covered just 34,000 miles from new and has a very comprehensive history. The Ferrari Classiche issued confirms matching numbers and a specification faithful in every way to the original factory specification. 

This Daytona was supplied when new by official importer Marranello Concessionaires and was used by them as a demonstration vehicle following registration on the 23rd November 1971. 

On the 13th January 1972, a Mr Everard of Radcliffe Hall, Leicestershire, purchased the car from Marranello Concessionaires, however he sold it back to them later that month as following a long lunch he had been followed by Police for many miles on the day of collection. The original letter on file from him explains that he felt such a “showy” car was not for him after all!

At the end of January 1972 the Daytona sold again to a Mr Rowlandson, a resident of Kingston, not far from Marranello Concessionaires. An established Rolls Royce collector he retained the car until the end of 1976, taking the mileage to 16,000 miles during this time. He used the supplying dealer for service and maintenance work as required and detailed in the substantial history file.

On the 11th December 1976, the Daytona was purchased by Ceanan Baird from Strattons of Wilmslow who would later become a Ferrari main agent. Their invoice on file indicates a purchase price of £11,000! Mr Baird kept the car until 14th June 1983 increasing the mileage to nearly 27,000 miles. As with previous owners he looked after it diligently.

In August 1983 the car was purchased by well-known Ferrari specialists, Rardley, from Mr Baird. They sold the car later that year to a further owner who continued to use Rardley for servicing during ten years of ownership.

In March 1993 Rardley sold the Daytona once again to well-known collector Mr Brandon Wang, owner of a fantastic car collection. At this point the car had covered nearly 30,000 miles and a full service was completed before delivery by Rardley as documented in invoicing on file.

Later that year the Daytona passed to a friend of Mr Wang, also an owner of some fine motor cars. I saw the Daytona for the first time in this collection in the mid 1990’s, stored at the time at the owner’s beautiful estate in Hampshire. It remained in this ownership until 2001 and was extremely well maintained by Ferrari main agent Westover Sports Cars, as documented in invoicing on file. It saw very little use but was stored in a perfect dehumidified environment.

In 2002 the car was sold once again to a Mr Filipidis who retained it for ten years. Following purchase he immediately embarked upon a renovation programme with many invoices on file detailing the intensive work and great expenditure over an eight-year period. This effort was rewarded with a concours class win at the annual Ferrari Owners Club Concours event in 2010, the score sheet on file showing 350/400 points, a rare attainment. 

The last owner purchased the Daytona from well-known Ferrari specialists DK Engineering in September 2012. At this point mileage had risen to just 30,000 miles. Another fastidious enthusiast with an impressive private collection, this owner sent the Daytona to his preferred restorer, the much-revered Moto Technique for a full strip and repaint in the original shade of silver. Countless photographs and invoicing on file document this work. Following this O’Rourke trimmers, widely regarded as the best in the business were commissioned to re-trim the car in the original shade of Pelle Blue, using original materials and without regard to cost, again this is documented and illustrated on file.

Today the Daytona presents beautifully and drives perfectly, a real testament to the no compromise approach taken by each owner to maintenance and restoration. It has covered just 34,000 miles and a comprehensive history file documents the car’s life as mentioned above. It also comes with original toolkit and Ferrari Classiche red book.
