The SL Collection - 1970 Mercedes 280SL
These 'Pagodas' continue to have a huge following and deservedly so, an extremely stylish convertible that is beautifully made and so usable. Unfortunately, it is that very usability that has been the downfall of many a ?Pagoda? and it is consequently very hard now to find a good low mileage original example.?However look no further!!. This is one of the finest 280SL,s in existence. It is in superb and completely original order throughout and it has covered only 17,000 miles from new. Every detail of the car is perfect and it drives and even smells like a new car.
First registered on the 22nd of May 1970, the car was supplied to Mrs E Bulmer of Harrogate, Yorkshire by dealer Jack Playford of Purley in Surrey.
For the first ten years of its life the car was maintained by Croft and Blackburn Ltd, the Mercedes Benz main dealer in Ripon, Yorkshire. Mrs Bulmer left the car in her will to her son, Mr Gordon Bulmer who registered it in his name on the 20th April 1992. The car was subsequently registered in another family members name, Mrs Jean Bulmer on 21st June 1994.?On the 5th August 1994 the car was purchased by specialist dealer Bramley in Surrey, they sent the car to renowned Pagoda specialists John Haynes of Worthing. Following inspection the car was fully overhauled by him to the highest standard. Bramley subsequently sold the car, repurchased it and then sold it again, each time to one of their regular customers. The car continued to be maintained by John Haynes.?
In 2007 we sold the car to the collection. This followed a long search for a very good original Pagoda. I certainly remember the diligence of the inspector. He spent most of one day examining the car in every detail!
Following purchase, the car was transported to Ireland and placed with the other SLs in a heated motor house. It received very little use. Following its return to Hairpin, the car has been fully serviced and is now ready for its next lucky owner!
